A Truly Special Afternoon with Norman Malone and Howard Reich

We were honored to host a screening of For the Left Hand, followed by an unforgettable conversation with Emmy-winning writer-producer Howard Reich and the extraordinary pianist Norman Malone.

Before the film, we invited the community to a hands-on activity: guests created a quick drawing using their non-dominant hand. This simple exercise offered a vivid glimpse into the challenge Norman embraced—learning to perform some of the most demanding piano works with only his left hand—and set a thoughtful tone for the evening.

Mr. Malone’s story moved everyone in the room. After surviving a devastating attack at age 10 that left him paralyzed on his right side, he refused to let tragedy define him. He devoted his life to mastering the left-hand repertoire—some of the most exacting music ever written—and did so quietly, without seeking the spotlight, until sharing his story at age 78. His journey is a testament to resilience, dignity, and the healing power of art.

Our audience was deeply engaged in the Q&A, which touched on creativity, perseverance, disability, and the ways music can restore what life takes away. We were especially delighted to celebrate Mr. Malone’s 88th birthday a little early—with a beautiful cake from Weber Bakery and warm wishes from our community.
